Growth in PC shipments turns anemic, researcher says

A storm of trouble is forcing research firm Garter to revise its 2011 and 2012 PC shipment forecasts, the company announced today.

Previously, Gartner estimated that worldwide PC shipments in 2011 and 2012 would grow 9.3 percent and 12.8 percent, respectively, over year-earlier figures. However, the research firm has now revised that forecast down to 3.8 percent growth for 2011 and 10.9 percent growth in 2012. According to Gartner, 352 million PC ships will ship this year, while 404 million will be sent out next year.

What can I do to prevent my PC from Crashing?

On our Suppport Desk we often get asked by users - what can I do to avoid my PC crashing?

There are many reasons why computers crash. When computers are in constant use at the office or at home, sometimes more than 8 hours a day 5 days a week without regular maintenance computers become more prone to crashes.

Is it user error?

Not necessarily; however it can be caused by lack of disk space, frequent adding or removing programmes, constant use of the internet, accumilation of Windows temp files and temporary internet files, the slower the registry becomes, disks become fragmented or errors in the registry amongst other things can all contribute to computers crashing.

How do I avoid these crashes?

Doing some regular house keeping is important. Yes it is a chore, but it is important to do these to keep the computer running smoothly:-

Free up as much disk space as possible - make use on an external USB Hard Disk to store all your data - they are very inexpensive these days.

Freeing up space on the C Drive which is used by the operating system for virtual memory. A lack of free space means a general performance slowdown.

It is advisable to have a PC Preventative Maintenence every 4-6 months to troubleshoot any problems that you may have. Do not suffer and procrastinate reporting the problem. On our Suppport Desk we often get asked by users - My PC or Laptop takes ages to boot up, how do I speed up my PC?

Whether you’re running Windows Vista or you’re running the Windows 7 beta, the below 9 tips should help:-

1. Slim Down Your Startup Group

Do you really need all those groovy gadgets to launch when you boot up?

Windows Sidebar can take quite a long time to start up, so think about slimming down your set of startup applications.

Click the Start button,

type msconfig in the Start Search box,

and then press ENTER to open the System Configuration dialog box.

Click the Startup tab to see what applications are configured to launch at startup.

Note—you’re not removing the actual applications; you’re preventing them from launching when you boot up, and you can re-enable them if you need to.

It is also a bad idea to have Outlook in your startup group. If you want a better overall startup experience, launch Outlook when you get to your desktop.

2. Update Your Drivers

Windows Update can help keep your drivers up to date.

There can be a lag time, however, between the release of a Windows update and the release of a manufacturer’s driver update. If you’re keen to improve your boot time, consider an automatic or manual update.

3. Update Your BIOS

The BIOS (“basic input output systems”) is the set of essential software routines that test hardware at startup, start the operating system, and support the transfer of data among hardware devices.

Some BIOS take two seconds, some take five to ten seconds.

The overall end-to-end boot time can be affected by the overall BIOS. Ask your Hiteishee Support Team when convenient to update your BIOS.

4. Update Your Antivirus Software

The status of your antivirus software is typically displayed in Windows Security Center.

To open Windows Security Center, click the Start button,

click Control Panel,

click Security,

and then click Security Center.

Click Malware protection.

If Windows can detect your antivirus software, it will be listed under Virus protection. If your software needs to be updated, click Update now.

5. Update Your Antimalware Software

If you don’t use scheduled scans or if you don’t get updates automatically, you should check for new definitions at least once a week.

To help protect your computer, Windows Defender will notify you if your definitions are out of date for more than seven days.

To open Windows Defender, click the Start button,

click All Programs,

and then click Windows Defender.

Click the arrow next to the Help button,

and then click Check for Updates.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

6. Don’t Double Up on Antivirus Programs

We’ve seen systems with multiple antivirus programs running at the same time; this is a really bad idea.

If it’s a speedy boot time you crave, don’t run more than one antivirus or antimalware program.

7. Periodically Defrag

How often do you defrag?

In our experience, it doesn’t run often enough.

We advises analyzing and defragmenting disks every two to four weeks.

To run the Disk Defragmenter,

click the Start button,

type Defrag in the Start Search box,

and then press ENTER.

8. Lose the Bloat on Your Machine

Don’t install lots of likely unnecessary software just because it might look cool or be fun.

9. Use Sleep and Resume

Windows lets you put your computer into an energy-saving mode called “sleep.” Why is this a good idea?

Booting up is hard on your machine.

Real-world feedback from consumers—tells us that sleep and resume cycles produce fewer errors and hangs than shutting down and rebooting.

Using “sleep and resume” is not only easier on your system, but faster, too. The typical machine with good drivers can wake from slumber in two to five seconds.

The vast majority of the time, I will use sleep. I tend to only use shutdown when I need to install an update that requires a restart.

To put your computer to sleep, press the power button, click the Sleep button on the Windows start menu, or, if you have a laptop, simply close the lid.

On most computers, you can resume working by pressing the power button. However, not all computers are the same. You may be able to wake your computer by pressing any key on the keyboard, clicking a mouse button, or opening the lid on a laptop.

Smithfield Bar and Grill Networking Event

Having recently attended a Networking event that was organised by a well know establishment at the Smithfield Bar and Grill

I have some reservations about the choice of venue. On entering we were greeted by a hail of announcements which all seemed to merge as the various organisers informed us of how to network and wished us luck. At this point some humour or original advice would have been more helpful.

My intention was to find many of the organisations that specifically may be looking to outsource IT, or whom may have a clientele that are in need of a top notch IT Solutions specialist and market leader of the calibre of Hiteishee.

As I looked around it became obvious to me that many of the companies listed on the guest list were not present, especially the Banks who probably had more urgent concerns at this time.

Determined to make the most of any networking event I secured a glass of wine and made my way into the midst of the gathering. I just needed to be naturally effervescent and radiate success.

In attendance were a cross section of one man band companies, small traders from outside London and a variety of SME’s and Large Corporate business. Each with an individual and tailored style to suit each prospective client.

What always impresses me is the sincerity of all present at these events. Everyone was also very polished at making a case for their organisation; they were natural, bursting with enthusiasm and keen to make strong connections.

For me though a Bar and Grill didn’t really do the job, as it was too crowded and without areas where you could talk further business or relax, except if you wished to dine there.

During the evening a singer/ guitarist played, although they were completely out of place and lost at such an event where no one was paying any attention to music.

I prefer events that involve an element of novelty and surprise and this one certainly didn’t. I want to be amused and entertained.

I really enjoyed the company of the people that I met but next time I want to attend a Networking event that is grander and stylish and with a more productive and organised feel to it.

If any of you were at the same event I would love to know your views and opinions. These are my own thoughts and your comments are welcome.

There is always an element of surprise at these Networking Events. You never know quite what you will find here. Perhaps that’s the attraction; they may even become addictive to attend.

Can we all find that ideal corporate client and secure that huge contract? Find out the next time when I shall be discussing our follow up meetings. We shall see what results from all the talk and statements of intent.

As a social events organiser I am used to talking to people that I may have nothing in common with. I would find a venue and then as the guests arrived, greet them and engage in some kind of conversation. I found myself socialising with every type of person imaginable. I always made the effort as that was my responsibility.

On attending my first networking event organised in London by Business Link, I was surprised at the friendliness of the gathering and the fact that workers and management of all types and levels was represented.

Here instead of trying to impress someone you actually liked by telling them something amusing, sharing a joke, or exaggerating your circumstances so that you come across as a company chairman. We were all here with the focused intention to locate the biggest financial prospect representing their organisation, make a beeline for them and dazzle them with all the reasons our customers love our service and keep coming back for more. As everyone knew the rules this never came across as insincere or seemed inappropriate.

After satisfying ourselves with an array of quality Thai food and some wine, we all made our way in groups to the lift to shuffle our way up to the speed networking room for a 60 second presentation to the person next to us. Each of us firing our well rehearsed pitch in rotation. This was hilarious as many of us found ourselves in fits of laughter seeing the funny side of our hurried speech.

My next Networking Event was organised by the North London Business Club. As we arrived I noticed a wine table with an array of customised fine wines, I was beginning to wonder if all these organisers felt that drinking was an essential part of all these social networking do’s.

The speakers representing Business Club are extremely professional and also hilarious. One of them clearly could make a living as a stand up comic, as he was willing to poke fun at anyone.

They have a way of making you feel relaxed as soon as you arrive. Again later in the evening we delivered a speech about each of our companies, only this time we explained the merits and personal interests of the person we were seated with to all present.

These events really are a great way to meet companies that you can secure business with. I met a guy who told me how his organisation had won a £20k deal with a company that his organisation had talked to at one of these shows. Also people have met their prospective partners and started relationships just through attending. I had no expectations other than to enjoy myself and that I most certainly did.

So if you feel you can sell your Company and naturally come across well when meeting strangers, why not try it yourself, there are deals to be done, friends to be made and opportunities a plenty here.

When socialising or networking; Friends, Family and associates always ask “So how do you choose the right type of IT Support Company”?

The last time we searched on the web there were over 2000 companies in London alone providing IT Services of some sort or another so you can imagine that competitiveness in our sector is fierce (Yell.com).

Choosing IT Support in London or a company anywhere nationally the same principles will apply.
These service providers will come preaching that they are the best but will come with different prices and levels of competence, we have listed some obvious things that people tend to ignore.

Top tips:-

Price: - Don’t go for the cheapest no matter how tempting. The least expensive “Service Provider” is not necessarily going to provide a reliable service or meet response times. Remember that every company have bills to pay and Qualified Skilled Engineers don’t come cheap.

Product & Quality: - IT Company’s offering to provide support at half the cost of anyone else? Find out why this is – There is always a catch!

Detail: - What does the offer of maintenance support service actually cover you for? Get a detailed proposal not simply a 2 page summary. Is it all inclusive? – Parts, Labour, Loan…

Location: - Where your IT Service provider is actually based is critical to how fast they can respond when you need an Engineer to attend onsite.

Out to Lunch? - Help desk availability is very important! They need to be there when you need them, as is an excellent skills set look for Investors in People or similar accreditations.

Here today gone tomorrow: - Carry out a thorough credit check – there are too many IT companies going bust. Visit the companies premises and ask to see whatever you require as proof that they actually live up to their claims and are delivering in the workplace.

Long term relationships: - Find an organisation that not only meets your needs but surpasses them. Remember you are a growing company and your needs will change – you don’t want to change your IT company, Lawyer, Bank, Doctor too often.

References: - Take up references and make sure that their customers are truly satisfied.

Compare Apples with Apples: - Ask what their overall charge is for a yearly IT contract with an unlimited number of call outs or technical support calls, and compare this also with their hourly or daily rate for a well qualified Engineer.

Accreditations: - Choose an organisation that is improving their own partnerships with major Computer vendors through training programmes and merits.

Quality & Quantity: - The number of Engineers that an IT company actually employs is not as important as the QUALITY & RATIO of customers to Engineers.

Depth & Breadth: - It makes sense to outsource to an IT Services and Solutions provider that are experts at supporting YOUR network infrastructure, Network Security, Firewalls, Installations, Upgrades, Disaster Recovery and many other areas.

In or Outsource: - Weigh up the costs and benefits, a good all rounder with the necessary qualifications and exposure will cost over £45,000 to employ. Rather than employ a singular full time IT Technical Support person in-house choose an IT company with a full complement of qualified people.

A Day in the Life of A Telemarketing Campagn Veteran

The keys to successful telemarketing are a clear and concise explanation of what you are contacting a person about with an explanation of what you are offering them. Combine this with a strong assured voice that carries your message with confidence. The more positive you are in your expression the stronger the likelihood that you will achieve the purpose of your call with a sale or an appointment. Staying positive and optimistic is crucial to how you come across; if you sound tired or jaded then this is obvious to the other person over the phone.

One of my many roles is to book appointments for Hiteishee who provides IT Support in London.

Appointments are like buses, they arrive in quick succession after a dry spell. The waiting time must be occupied in a creative manner that engages your enthusiasm and keeps your attention span both sharp and focused.

IT Support and IT Services are one of the toughest things to book appointments for - every man and his dog thinks they can provide an excellent service. So you know how competitive this can be.

In a typical day we spend up to four hours on the phone listening to people’s voicemail messages. This is because they either are not available or simply do not wish to answer the phone to another telesales person.

Returning to work for an IT Support Company in London

Wow! I have come back to work with Hiteishee who provide IT Support in London after being away just over two years and they seem to have grown from strength to strength.

When I was originally a part of the team at Hiteishee over five years ago I was a member of what seemed like a family unit in the sense that we were all assisting each other and integrating to facilitate the company’s growth through establishing the name and making people familiar with our drive for excellence in all areas.

I found myself literally doing everything, which included temporarily covering for Technical Support when the team were already engaged on a support call, or making calls to collect payments. This was as well as encouraging New Business sales through contacting the prospective clients and arranging meetings with them where we would present proposals to win the contract.

After 30 months I returned to find that there were fully structured departments with line managers that were in charge of teams of installation and senior technical support staff at Hiteishee.

Strategic planning and preparation allowed for and assured that Kumar the MD was staying ahead, through looking at the market and anticipating where the IT needs would be. Also he constantly has the foresight to employ the best and most experienced Technicians that were available in London.

Assembling a coherent team takes a person who is able to assess how people will fit into a Companies operation as well as integrate professionally and on a personal level. If a person is running their own agenda or has certain grudges then it will always affect their performance as they are generally unable to develop and grow as a team player.

But here were people united and assured. A group of fully fledged professionals who had each been there and done it elsewhere, or learnt through the coaching of the more experienced staff to the point that they were fully competent and confident in their own technical abilities.

From my own experience many companies are not lean enough as an operation and can sometimes have people who simply don’t belong and who can be disruptive or unproductive in a work situation, if left alone and unsupervised or not giving appropriate training or development.

Hiteishee were now ready to make inroads into the larger Corporate companies and also to expand upon their SME portfolio of clients. But this was not to be achieved at the expense of swapping personal and dedicated service for a cynical attitude of just chasing large clients for bigger profits.

Hiteishee are now more comprehensive, and have greatly increased their staff quota. These people have gained expert knowledge and know how through hands on experience of high level Network Security work and Technical expertise achieved through comprehensive brand training and attending field firewall installation and assessment when out on client project assignment.

From here Hiteishee are growing rapidly and further developing as the preferred IT Service and IT Solutions organisation for companies in Greater London. They are building upon a solid basis within their Engineering department that is enabling them to go Countrywide and provide National IT cover with their services.

This is my first blog on behalf of Hiteishee, myself and my team. We hope to write a lot more as we go on, and as you read it please free to give me some pointers on what you want to read about including any topics from IT Support to running a successful company.
